VIC: What Utility charges must Residential Rental Provide pay?

Refer to Residential Tenancies Act 1997 Section 53 & Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021 Regulation 22.

Residential Rental Providers are responsible for the following charges in relation to various utilities:

  • Installation costs and charges in respect of the initial connection to the premises of any electricity, water, gas, bottled gas, or oil supply service.

  • All rates, taxes or charges payable unless the Residential Tenancies Act stipulates that the renter is responsible.

  • All charges in relation to electricity, gas, oil, and water if the premises is not separately metered.

  • All charges from a water supply company that are not based on the amount of water supplied.

  • All costs relating to the supply of sewerage or drainage services.

  • All charges related to the supply/hire of gas bottles to the premises.

  • All charges relating to the pumping out and cleaning of sewage and septic tanks (unless damaged by the renter).

  • All costs for the initial installation of fixed internet and telecommunications connections (Incl. NBN).

  • All cartage charges for refilling fire safety water tanks.

  • All cartage charges for drinking water unless the charges are related to the amount of water provided.
